Phototype 1 : white, red-haired skin, possibly with freckles, very sensitive to the sun’s rays.
Phototype 2 : very fair skin, prone to sunburns and able to tan slightly.
Phototype 3 : fair skin, generally with blond hair, or even chestnut hair.
Phototype 4 : slightly tanned skin and less prone to sunburn.
Phototype 5 : dark skin that tans easily, without getting sunburn.
Phototype 6 : black skin that does not get sunburned.
Not all hairs grow at the same time, and in reality you only see part of your hairs. The other part is in a resting phase that can last up to several months. Hairs can be in three different phases, which makes it understandable that they cannot all be removed after a single session.
There are three phases in the hair growth cycle:
Anagen phase: it is in this hair growth phase (up to 6 months) that the treatment will be most effective, because the root contains the most melanin, which will absorb the laser light. During an Alex/Yag session, these hairs are targeted by the laser treatment.
Catagen phase: growth slows down, then stops; the hair remains in place while waiting for the telogen phase.
Telogen phase: in this part of the cycle, laser hair removal is useless. The hair is dead and remains in place for a certain amount of time, then falls out in preparation for the development of a new hair.
At any given time, 10 to 30% of the hair in a given area is in the growth phase.
Several sessions are needed to remove all hairs because, in the same area of skin, the three phases coexist, but only a small proportion of 30 to 50% of hairs is at rest. Hence the importance of planning multiple sessions over the course of a year for 100% effectiveness.
