With age or due to heredity, the fatty tissue along the bony rim under the eye
(orbital rim) can become too thin, revealing a hollow along this rim, and even bags under the eyes. This is one of the early signs of facial aging. The hollow under-eye area can extend down to the cheekbone, creating a hollow known as the tear trough.
